There are 3 types of veins most commonly treated at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology:
- Varicose Veins
- Spider Veins
- Reticular Veins
What Are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are rope-like veins that typically form on the legs. These veins are usually the result of a weak vein valve that is allowing blood to collect in the vein. Varicose veins can very noticeable due to their blue or purple color and their bulging from the skin. There are several factors that can contribute to one’s risk of developing spider veins. Genetics can play a factor in whether or not you will develop varicose veins in your lifetime. Being pregnant can sometimes cause varicose veins because of the hormonal changes and the pressure put on the veins. Varicose veins are increasingly common as you age and being overweight also increases the risk of developing them. In order to prevent varicose veins, it is also important not to sit or stand for long periods at a time.
What Are Spider Veins?
Spider veins are different from varicose veins due to the fact that they are smaller. Spider veins, also known as telangiectasias, are thin red or blue capillaries that are most commonly seen on the face and legs. They tend to resemble branches of a tree or a spider web and are close to the surface of the skin. The best treatment for spider veins is sclerotherapy, a procedure in which our expert doctors inject a sclerosing agent into the unwanted network of veins causing them to reduce in size and disappear.
What Are Reticular Veins?
Reticular veins are blue or green veins that most commonly form on the legs. Reticular veins are sometimes referred to as “feeder veins” and are commonly understood to be the cause of spider veins. These veins are typically the result of genetics, but can also be caused by hormonal imbalance and excess body weight. Like spider veins, reticular veins are commonly treated with the innovative sclerotherapy procedure.
