At Cosmetic Laser Dermatology in San Diego, our expert dermatologists receive numerous questions about our vein treatments. We’ve compiled a list of the most frequently asked questions below and patients are encouraged to contact our office for further information.
Q: What are varicose veins?
A: Varicose veins are large, bulging veins that can appear to be blue or dark purple. Varicose veins are most often found in the legs and are the result of backwards blood flow. They are not a necessary part of the body and can actually contribute to poor circulation.
Q: What are spider veins?
A: Spider veins are red or blue colored veins that are found closer to the surface of the skin as opposed to varicose veins. They are small and might appear like tree branches or thin lines. They can cover the leg, face, hands, or chest in small or large areas.
Q: Are vein treatments safe?
A: Each of the vein treatments we perform at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology is safe and effective in removing unwanted veins. Spider and varicose veins are not necessary in the body and removing them can actually improve your blood circulation and health. When performed by an expert dermatologist, vein treatments have very little risk.
Q: Are vein treatments painful?
A: Our doctors are committed to ensuring that each patient is as comfortable as possible during their vein treatment. Typically, vein treatments do not cause any pain and patients are often given local anesthetic prior to the treatment. Patients may feel slight discomfort around the treatment area during the removal process, but our doctors do what they can to minimize any pain.
Q: What are the differences between sclerotherapy and phlebectomy?
A: Sclerotherapy involves a medication called a sclerosing agent being injected into the veins using a very small needle. The sclerosing agent dissolves the vein and causes it to be absorbed back into the body. Patients can often see the veins start to diminish immediately once they’ve been injected with the sclerosing agent. Phlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to surgically remove bulging varicose veins that are larger than the size of a finger. A miniscule incision is made near the vein and the vein is then pulled out. During the initial consultation, our doctors will determine which vein treatment is ideal depending on the location and size of the vein.
Q: Why do you have to wear compression garments after treatment?
A: The compression garment, or compression stockings, apply just enough pressure to the treatment area to keep veins from regenerating. Many people find the compression stockings are actually quite comfortable! They can also be easily covered with pants.
Q: How many vein treatment sessions will I need to see results?
A: The majority of patients who receive sclerotherapy will only need one treatment. However, some patients may need 3-5 treatments in order to achieve optimal results. With a phlebectomy, most patients will only need one treatment and further treatments can be performed if bulging veins should develop. For those who receive laser treatments to remove face veins, multiple treatments are typically needed in order to see the best results.
Q: What is the recovery time for vein treatments?
A: Sclerotherapy involves very little downtime and after the treatment is completed, patients are encouraged to resume normal activities. For the first week, patients must wear compression stockings at all times in order for ideal results. Patients who undergo a phlebectomy are encouraged to stay active and try not to sit for long periods at a time. For the first few weeks, patients may experience some bruising, swelling, and redness around the treatment area. Phlebectomy patients must also wear compression stockings after their procedure to ensure the best results.
Q: How much do vein treatments cost?
A: The cost of vein treatments depends on a variety of factors including the type of procedure, the size of the veins, and the number of veins. Each patient will have different needs and so the price will vary from person to person. Your doctor will able to tell you more details about the cost of your procedure after your initial consultation.
Q: Who should perform vein treatments?
A: Vein treatments should be performed by board-certified dermatologists who have extensive knowledge and training on vein treatment procedures. In order to achieve optimal results, patients should seek doctors who have a proven record of successful vein treatments.

A: Dr. Mitchel Goldman is an innovator of sclerotherapy and is one of the leading world experts on using sclerotherapy to remove unwanted veins. Our doctors are highly trained experts in vein removal treatments and patients could not be in better hands than with Cosmetic Laser Dermatology.
